Steerpike

Profile

Name: Steerpike
Nickname(s): Queertike, Snearbite, Snakebite, kitchen rat
Gender: Male
Age and date of birth: 18, Unknown
Species: Human
Sexuality: Straight
Fandom: Gormenghast

Complete Character Description: Limb by limb, it appeared that he was sound enough, but the sum of these several members accrued to an unexpectedly twisted total. ~ Peake

He could be handsome, if he stopped scowling. Pale and sickly looking, shoulder length brown hair, fierce --- eyes. Steerpike stands about 6' tall, though he's never measured himself. He's slim and reasonably fit, but he has a slight slouch which increases when he is sulking, which is more often than not. A full mouth which can sometimes soften his features, but is usually set in a pout or scowl. He wears the grey coat that was given to him by Prunesquallor.

Personality: He's vicious, vindictive, sly, creepy and sinister. And those are his good points. Steerpike is a horrible fellow, who is driven to the point of insanity by his ambition and hatred of everything around him. He loathes anyone who has an easy life and will set out to completely destroy them while giggling behind the curtain. He is incredibly cunning, and quite bright, though he only uses his natural talents for his own gain. He thinks of no-one else and will beg, steal, lie, cheat or manipulate to get what he wants.

That said, Steerpike is still human. He has longings, and recognises to an extent his malicious nature. At choice moments in the past he has wished he could belong, that he could just be one of the blessed ones, and even calms his nature in the hopes of being accepted. These moments of 'clarity' are swiftly knocked down, either by himself or by external influences. Steerpike is a snake, and will always remain a snake.

He also has, at this stage in his life, all the tendancies of someone who will one day go completely, crazy-ape bonkers. The murky waters of madness are already seeping in around the corners of his mind, and it will only be a matter of time until he snaps.

The one positive (if you can call it that) trait is his patience. Steerpike will wait months, even years to get what he wants, slowly biding his time and taking his pleasures in knowing he is still in complete control of a situation. He is the puppet master, the one pulling the strings. If any of those strings break, he will dedicate his whole existence to retying the teather.

In short, he's a mad, vicious bastard. The kids will love him.

Background: Steerpike was born into the world screaming, naked and unloved. His mother was a scullery maid, and embarrased by her unwanted pregnacy, she left Steerpike as just a small boy with her own aging mother. Busy with her own work, Steerpike was mostly ignored, given only the bare minimum he needed to survive. As soon as he was old enough, which in the old woman's opinion was 3 years old, he was sent to the kitchens and promptly forgotten about. He never saw any member of his family again.

Time moved slowly in the kitchens. Though most of the other boys seemed content enough to settle into their forced lifestyle, Steerpike was always restless. He grew to hate everyone around him, from the older boys who teased and tormented him to the younger boys who whispered about him behind his back. Most of all he hated Swelter, the head chef of the kitchens and cook to the Lord Groan himself. Swelter seemed to take a particular pleasure in tormenting Steerpike, whipping and burning him almost daily.

Steerpike spent most of his early life trying to stay out of the way. He had never had anyone be kind or sympathetic towards him, in truth he would not have understood sympathy if it was offered. His only pleasure in life was the rare occasion when he would be allowed to serve in the great halls, which was only when all the other boys were unable and it was never to anyone of any importance.

Steerpike listened to the rest of the kitchen hands gossiping or joking together, which was how he learned the history of Gormenghast, his home. He became fascinated with the heirachy of the castle, and vowed to himself that he would one day crawl free from the vile Swelter and his kitchens and become the ruler of Gormenghast.

Steerpike was taught to read, learning from an old teacher who taught the boys their lessons once a week. Though he was not permitted to attend school, reading was a necessary skill in the kitchens. The recipie books were studied by all of Swelter's 'ickle boys', and Steerpike was no exception.

In his 16th year the castle was buzzing with the news that Titus Groan, the 77th Earl of Gormenghast had been born. To the kitchens this meant a feast, but to Steerpike it meant so much more. In his mind the castle had just created another opressor. The news was brought to the kitchens by Master Flay, the monosylabic manservant to the ruling Earl. About to recieve yet another beating from Swelter, Flay inadvertantly hepled Steerpike. Being his first glimpse of the heirachy he had become so obsessed with, Steerpike broke free of the kitchens and pursued Flay, begging him to save him from the kitchens and the hideous Swelter, to 'let him see a Groan'. For reasons unknown Flay decided to humour the young kitchen rat, and so Steerpike was taken to spy on the Lord Groan and the doctor Prunesquallor, where he overheard that the new baby, Titus, was unaturally ugly. Threatening to take the information public, he tried to blackmail Flay into keeping him out of the kitchens. Furious, Flay locked him in the tower to rot, but after several days in the tower Steerpike escaped.

He climbed over the roofs of Gormenghast, surveying the castle before his eyes fell on the Lady Fuschia. He snuck into her attic playrooms and charmed her with tales of his 'adventures'. Happy with her new plaything, and starved for attention as she was, Fuschia let Steerpike tag along with her for a time, before eventually getting him a job with her close friend Dr Prunesquallor. Steerpike impressed the doctor so much with his flattery, obedience and apparent wit, the doctor put him to work in the apothecary. Here, to Steerpike's delight, he was given complete access to all the medical tonics and tablets for the entire Groan family.

Waiting for his next opportunity to rise through the ranks of the castle, Steerpike learned the doctors trade, while doing the occasional mixing of his own.
